Potassium Permanganate
Potassium Permanganate

  • Accelerates the combustion of (in)(in)flammable substances.
  • Harmful when inhaled or taken in orally.
  • Keep out of reach from children.

    Potassium Permanganate
    Potassium Permanganate for treatment of fish, acting against a range of protozoan parasites including Trichodina, Trichodinella, Costia and Chilodonella.

    Be aware:
    • Only submit if advised by a veterinary surgeon or experienced expert
    • Make sure to wear gloves. Potassium permanganate can cause brown discoloration of the skin which is difficult to remove;
    • Do not spill, potassium permanganate causes stains which are difficult to remove;
    • Dangerous if used without caution. Potassium permanganate is a very irritating substance;
    • Avoid eye contact. Potassium permanganate can cause permanent blindness;
    • Wear safety glasses while mixing and spreading potassium permanganate. Also wear an inhalation mask;
    • Overdosing will without doubt lead to death of entire fish population;
    • Potassium permanganate will effect all metals, excluding stainless steel;
    • Do not combine with other medicines (Combining is at your own risk). Despite our carefulness we can not accept any responsibility if fish should die after the use of potassium permanganate.

    When potassium permanganate should not be used:
    • If the water temperature of your pond is above 27 degrees Celsius;
    • If the fish are gasping for air;
    • If applying sufficient air to the pond is not possible;
    • If an oxygen consuming treatment has been performed;
    • If there is not enough circulation in the pond;
    • If the content of the pond is not exactly known;
    • If the water quality is not in optimal order (e.g. low TH/KH or if ammonia –NH4- or nitrite –NO2- is present);
    • If no discoloration fluid (hydrogen peroxide) is present;
    • If you can not stay with your pond to watch your fish during treatment.

    General treatment including filtration systems:
    Measure exactly the amount potassium permanganate needed. Calculate your ponds content and stay within a 10% margin. Apply the maximum amount of air to your pond. Dissolve the potassium permanganate in a bucket of lukewarm water and spread equally across the pond. Potassium permanganate works well in cold water. The colder de water the safer, as cold water has a greater ability to dissolve oxygen.

    • Clean your filtration system trying to remove as many present dirt as possible;
    • Ad 2 grams per 1000 litres of pond water;
    • Note down the exact time when you started the treatment. The water should remain its purple colour for 6 whole hours;
    • If the purple colour should turn brown within these 6 hours, ad another 1 gram per 1000 litres of pond water;
    • If the purple colour should turn brown for the second time within these 6 hours, ad again 1 gram per 1000 litres of pond water;
    • If the water after these three dosages looses its purple colour and turns brown for the third time, within the 6 hours of treatment: stop the treatment immediately. You should then repeat the treatment but only after a two day waiting period;
    • After 6 hours stop the treatment. Refresh 15% of the pond water;

    Filtration systems:
    We advise you to leave your filtration systems operating. Please take into account that it will lose much of its biological capacity. You can also decide to short-circuit your filtration system. A small pomp will be enough to do so. Supplying extra air is recommendable. However: if you short-circuit your filtration system the chance that re-contamination occurs is very likely. Turn UV-lamps out during treatment. Any present zeolite should be removed during treatment.

    Fish:
    Adding KP will cause your fish to grate, flash and jump. Because the parasites are getting active during treatment, they will cause temporary irritation to your fish. Sturgeon will probably not survive treatment with potassium permanganate and should be removed from the pond.
